Forest School

Overview

Forest School is a child centred and child led inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. It is a long-term inclusive programme that supports play, exploration, and risk taking, encouraging the children to be the best they can be and to challenge themselves.  It develops confidence and self esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural/woodland setting.

At Chollerton we aspire to ensure that all children develop a life long love of learning through outdoor activities and education.  Children will be encouraged to be inquisitive, creative, confident and successful individuals who are able to manage their own risks.  They will work independently and with others to problem solve, gain trust, build relationships and have a greater understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Forest Schools Code of Conduct

Look after yourself

Look after other people

Look after the environment

Ask before you pick.

Ask before you lick.

Be careful with your stick

Children develop a strong understanding of the Forest School rules and a great respect for the environment we work in. Leaders lead by example from the clothes they wear to how they behave with and around tools.

The ethos of Forest School is very much related to taking care of the environment. Children need to make the links between what they see and do, and the impact this can have.  Ensuring there is no waste left when we leave the woods or site is essential.

‘Take nothing but memories. Leave nothing but footprints’

Explaining why we need to leave no waste is an essential element of caring for ourselves and the environment we live in. We aim to support The Countryside Code.

Clothing

We will be out in all weathers, so it is important that children are dressed appropriately.  Layers of clothing and waterproof outerwear and suitable walking boots or wellies with warm socks are essential.  They must be warm and comfortable as feeling cold and damp isn’t fun and can be dangerous.  Hats and gloves for winter, and sun hats and sun cream for the summer, are also required.  Within the woods, arms and legs must be covered with a long sleeved top and trousers to protect them from nettles, brambles, ticks etc.

Our Forest School Rules

  • We use our eyes and ears.

  • We leave sticks etc. out of the camp area.

  • We walk in a woodland environment.

  • We always think about the risks before choosing whether to do something.

  • We keep our hands away from our mouths.

  • We can always see camp unless we’re with an adult.

  • We treat others and what they have made with respect.

  • We are kind to all – our friends, adults, animals and plants.

  • We have fun!
